Finding the basket stall closed (meaning the baskets were covered with a tarp as the vendor had lunch nearby) we did what any good shopper should do in China when faced with the inability to make a purchase immediately: start undoing the tarp and trying on the baskets. This brought not only the vendor out from her lunch but a crowd to watch six foreign ladies try on local baskets.
After haggling, a trip to her storeroom, an exchange or two of colorful straps, five baskets were purchased and taken home. (I can personally confirm that the smallest size of these do, indeed, fit into an overhead airplane compartment.)
