Description:
This boutique hotel is at the other extreme of modern/hip/urban. Housed in an old mansion (get it?) of one of Shanghai's old mafia bosses, it has been refurbished in 1920s style and it heavy on gold and marble. It's meant to look rich and luxurious. In my opinion, it's lacking as the decor is a bit overdone, but it does give you the feel of stepping back in time, which is rather fun.Address:

Guide Comments:
- The Mansion bills itself as 5-star but if you're used to this many stars, you might be a tad disappointed. Service is still not fantastic and the deterioration and flimsiness of some of the room fittings will set you wondering about the price of your bill.
- The location of this hotel is fantastic. Right downtown, you can walk to Huai Hai Road, Nanjing Road, and Fuxing Road - all great for shopping and dining. Xinle Road, itself has some nice spots like Constellation Bar and Epicure (wines).
- Definitely head to the top floor terrace. Since opening, they've had trouble keeping the restaurant going under the same management so it's constantly changing. I can't recommend the food or the service, but you can't go wrong with a gin & tonic and the view.
