There are a number of places to purchase books in English and other languages while in Shanghai. Many larger international hotels have small bookstores in their lobbies but there are a number of independent bookstores with decent selections.

Garden Books
Garden Books has a wide range of books on China interest as well as fiction and children's books. There is a nice cafe on the ground floor serving gelato, coffee and other snacks.

Shanghai Foreign Language Book Store
This multi-story store in the heart of the stationery district is the best place to find materials for studying Chinese as well as China-interest. There's a limited selection of foreign-language fiction and children&'s books on the upper floors.
