2008 Shanghai Biennale

By Sara Naumann, About.com

On the art scene, the seventh Shanghai Biennale takes place from September 9 to November 16, 2008. While I don't find this year's theme, Translocalmotion, in other words, urbanization, very original, it is quite an obvious one when one spends any time here in Shanghai. So I suppose it's very appropriate.

From the Biennale's website:
The Biennale reflects on the socio-economic and cultural implications of urbanization on both the local and global levels, including the issues of migration and identity. It investigates the spatial and social boundaries between the rural and urban populations, migrants and citizens, guests and hosts. Is the fruitful interaction between them possible? Can cities make our life better?

The Shanghai Art Museum hosts the main exhibition. But there are a number of exhibitions collaborating off-site to complete the Biennale. While those haven't been published yet, the following is a listing from 2006. I'll update this section as more information on the participating galleries becomes available.

Download this helpful Shanghai Biennale Map and hit all of the exhibitions during your trip to Shanghai.
