Simatai Section of the Great Wall

Overview:
The wall at Simatai is incredibly dramatic, snaking straight up steep sections of the mountains. The Simatai wall is dotted with many interesting watchtowers. Unlike the Badaling and Mutianyu sections, this area has not been restored since it was built 500 years ago. lies to the west of Simatai .
Location:
about 80 miles (130km) northeast of Beijing
History:
Simatai was started in the early Hongwu years (1368-1398) of the Ming Dynasty. Like many sections of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall visited today, this section was also built under the supervision of General Qi Jiguang. It has not been renovated or restored since those years.

Getting there:
  • Take bus from Beijing Bus Station in Dong Zhi Men to Miyun County, change to minibus for travel to Simatai
  • Take Tourist Bus No. 12 from either the Xuan Wen Men or Dong Si Shi Tiao stops (Beijing)
Essentials:
  • Admission: RMB 32 (US$ 4)
  • Opening hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:50 p.m.
  • Recommended time for visit: allow two hours, four to five hours if trekking to Jinshanling
Tips:

Wear comfortable shoes or trekking gear if you plan to do the hike to Jinshanling
