Opium Bed, lobby I-Spa, Intercontinental Hotel, Shanghai

Sara Naumann
The Bottom Line
If you are staying at or near the Intercontinental Hotel, then a visit to the I-Spa is definitely worth the money. While definitely on the pricey side, you won't be disappointed with a poor massage or treatment. Staff are well-trained and really try to work with your special needs.
Pros
  • Relaxation isn't limited to the treatment itself, the whole experience is geared toward tranquility
  • Well-trained staff, speak English and are very responsive to special needs
  • No-rush service allows you to take your time and enjoy a cup of tea and a moment to ponder life
Cons
  • On the pricey side, prepare to indulge
Description
Guide Review - Review of the Spa Intercontinental at the Intercontinental Hotel, Shanghai
The Intercontinental Hotel happens to be situated very near Next Age, the largest shopping mall in Shanghai. After wearing yourself out after an afternoon of bargain-hunting, a little visit to the fourth floor of the Intercontinental is a good idea, since you're in the neighborhood and you must be tired after all that work!

You'll soon find yourself enveloped in a quiet, tranquil place and you'll quickly forget the chaos you left outside. Helpful staff invite you to relax either on the gorgeous opium bed in the lobby or through the back in their "relaxation rooms", appointed with day beds looking out onto a little patch of green. Sip lavender, rose, chamomile or jasmine tea (or a blend of those) and choose your treatment from a menu of 14 services.

I can highly recommend the Signature Massage. First, your therapist will lead you to one of the private rooms, such as "Nobility" or "Truth", where you'll find private changing quarters, a shower, a separate toilet, a safe and closet for your belongings. You'll be invited to sit and enjoy your tea while your therapist washes away the city from your feet in warm water scented with flower petals.

You may then choose your treatment oil and relax on the massage bed for 80 minutes of pure bliss. The Signature Massage begins with the back, working the lower back and shoulders particularly. It then concentrates on the calves and upper thighs. It ends with a head massage that will leave you wishing you had another 80 minutes.
