A Visitor's Guide to the Taipei Zoo

By , About.com Guide

Overview:

In Taiwan over the October holidays from Shanghai, we unfortunately timed our little trip with a typhoon. After four straight days of rain we decided to try our luck at the Taipei Zoo since the online information told us there were several indoor pavilions. We thought, why not? Armed with umbrellas and raincoats, we were ready to get outside for a change.

Details:

  • Taipei Zoo (台北動物園)
  • Say it in Chinese: "tie pay dong oo yoo ahn"
  • Address: No. 30, Section 2, Xinguang Road, Taipei
  • Admission Price: NT$60 for adults, NT$30 for kids aged 6-12, free for kids under 6.
  • Open: daily 9am-5pm
  • Metro stop: MRT Taipei Zoo Station

Facilities:

  • Visitor Center & Information Service (pick up an English map)
  • First aid station
  • Wheelchair and stroller service
  • Lockers
  • Nursing rooms
  • Shuttle train
  • Gondola
  • Restaurants and concessions
  • Souvenir shops
  • Toilets with animal poop-themed educational panels

Features:

The zoo is very large. Long and narrow, it is built up the side of one of Taipei's many hillsides so as you go through the zoo, you'll be going uphill. It has 12 outdoor animal areas and 10 indoor areas (thus the thought we'd go in the rain). It is relatively new with beautiful landscaping, plenty of places to picnic and rest and very nice animal enclosures (though some do look like they need a renovation).

Outdoor Enclosures:

The outdoor features include a "Formosan" Animal area which includes animals native to the island of Taiwan, a Fern Garden, Insect Valley, Children's Zoo, Asian Tropical Rainforest Animals, Water Garden, Australian Animals, Desert Animals, African Animals, Bird World, Temperate Zone Animals and Wetland Park.

Perhaps because of the rain, we were most impressed by the hippo exhibit - the best I've ever seen outside seeing wild ones in the Serengeti. In a very large enclosure, you are able to look down upon a large pond filled with hippos. Miniature hippos hang out in an area above the large hippo enclosure.

Indoor Features:

The indoor enclosures include an educational center, insectarium, "conservation corridor", children's theatre, koala house, special exhibit house, nocturnal animal house, cool energy conservation house, amphibian and reptile house and penguin house.

Inside the special exhibit house when we visited were some pandas that clearly get a lot of visitors on busy days (during our rainy visit we were three of about 7 total visitors). The most exciting for us was the koala house. Each up on their own tree, we enjoyed watching these cuddly guys snooze.

Stroller-Friendly?:

Yes, very. There were a few places where we had to carry the stroller up or down stairs but for the most part, there are ramps and relatively smooth rolling.

Guide Comments:

If you have a fear of Asian zoos, you can put it at ease when you visit the Taipei Zoo. It is really a lovely space with beautiful gardens, plenty of fun, interesting animals, and lots of space for kids to run and have fun while parents stroll through the wide, stroller-friendly paths.

Despite the rain, we enjoyed ourselves and were glad to get outside. The park is very green and lush and then animals fun to see (the rain didn't seem to bother them much).
