The Bottom Line

In a city full of luxury hotels, it's hard to stand out among the crowd. But the Conrad does, despite its lack of history (like the Peninsula) on the island. Impeccable service and extremely comfortable rooms make the Conrad an excellent choice both for the business traveler as well as for a family in Hong Kong to do a bit of sight seeing and shopping. Of course, you have to have a five-star budget to stay at the Conrad, or plenty of Hilton Honors points (which we did, thanks to my husband's frequent business trips there). And don't forget to book well in advance, the Conrad is quite often fully booked.

Pros

  • Incredible service - the best I've experienced in a hotel.
  • Lots of distinctive details in the room - above and beyond the typical 5-star (see my list below).
  • Perfect location in Hong Kong's Central neighborhood with views of the harbor.
  • Atop Hong Kong's Pacific Place shopping center, convenient to dining and shopping.
  • Lovely outdoor pool and cafe. Cool off with a swim; take advantage of HK's year-round warm weather.

Cons

  • Ridiculous internet charges.
  • Oddly, not enough electrical outlets. Aside from at the desk, only one extra near the minibar.
  • No iPod docking station.

Guide Review - Conrad Hotel Review

I decided to join my husband during a business trip to Hong Kong. It's a short trip from Shanghai and now that my son is of age, we thought it would be fun to take him to Hong Kong Disneyland. So we used our Hilton Honors points and booked into the Conrad for three nights. My husband breathed a visible sigh of relief as he entered his "home away from home", transferring from another hotel in Kowloon where he'd been staying for a conference.

Of course I knew the Conrad would be a classy hotel, but I was pleased and surprised by the level of service and the amenities in the rooms. Business travelers have a different set of needs than do tourists - and especially tourists with children - but the Conrad caters to everyone. I was so happy with all the great things about the room that I immediately started making a list:

  • Slippers that are just my size! Usually the slippers are created using a six-foot Western man's shoe size but not at the Conrad.
  • The Teachings of Buddha next to the Bible in the bedside drawer.
  • A kids' menu on the room-service menu.
  • Scissors in the desk.
  • Lots of empty drawers in which to put clothes and shoes.
  • Plenty of hangers - for men's and women's clothing.
  • DVD player.
  • Large bottles of complimentary drinking water.

Service was faultless and very friendly. We seemed to require a lot of random items this trip - from adapters to a screwdriver to replace batteries in one of my son's toys. Everything we asked for was brought without delay and when a bottle of wine that my husband ordered failed to appear in thirty minutes, it was delivered free of charge.

In the landscape of luxury hotels and guest expectations, the Conrad truly stands on its service. My husband returns because the staff know and remember him. I'd return because it's not only comfortable, they take good care of their guests.
