What to Wear to a Chinese Temple

If you've visited temples in Southeast Asia then you've probably come across being asked (especially women) to cover up bare shoulders or put on a longer skirt. Perhaps you've even been asked to remove your shoes. While many Buddhist temple complexes practice very traditional and conservative customs, you won't likely run into this in China.

Despite the fact that visiting a temple in China can be a much more casual affair, I think it's still best to dress appropriately in the country you’re visiting. Chinese people don't tend to dress up the way we think of it in the West. Often, for women, high heels and fancy jeans is dressy. Men are generally in suits or slacks. But jeans for men are also becoming thought of as trendy and dressy.

A temple, however casual the visitors might be dressed, is still a place of worship. You should be circumspect in your clothing selection and be respectful of the community you’re visiting. Short-shorts, tank tops, halter tops and cut-offs are generally not great choices. Dress neatly, but casually and comfortably, and you’ll be fine.
