The Songs had allied with the Mongols to ward off other invaders but soon the Khans looked lustily at the riches of the Chinese empire. For the first time, China would fall under foreign rule. They made Beijing their capital. While ruling with a heavy hand, the Mongols did much for China’s infrastructure. Marco Polo visited China during Mongol rule.
