Notes: Under the Tangs China’s influence abroad was unparalleled. Through trade and diplomatic ties China’s influence spread from Japan to Central Asia. Buddhism also gained a considerable foothold and flourished under the patronage of Tang rulers as can be seen in the statuary at Longmen Grottoes.
Related Reading: During the peaceful Tang Dynasty, art and literature flourished and trade with the west thrived. The Tangs moved their capital back to Chang’an, near present day Xi’an and the city gained world-wide importance as the portal to the Silk Road.
