The Song Dynastic period is subdivided into the Northern Song period, 960-1127 and Southern Song period 1127-1279, again noted from their capitals. The Northern Song reigned from Kaifeng in present-day Henan province and the Southern Songs from Linan, now Hangzhou. The Southern Songs were finally defeated by the Mongols in 1279 but during their rule from the south, several other states sprung up: the Western Xia (AD 1038-1227) and the Jin (AD 1115-1234) located in eastern China.
