Beginning January 1, 2013, Beijing and Shanghai will allow visitors transiting through China to stay in Beijing and Shanghai for up to 72 hours. This doesn't mean you can travel for the weekend to Shanghai from KL without a visa, but it does mean that passengers traveling on to third countries can make a stop-over in China without the hassle of obtaining a costly visa.
