Trying to see the festivities in Beijing on October 1, 2009? Make a date with your sofa & TV...

I guess I shouldn't be too shocked, considering security concerns, but I've been trying to plan a little getaway for my family for the October holidays. Offices and schools have a week off to commemorate National Day on the first and the Mid-Autumn Festival on the third of October. 2009 is the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China so it's a big deal this year. I've been reading all about the massive parade and festivities planned for the celebration in Beijing, but apparently I'm not invited! And neither are you.

Regular folks won't be allowed to go near Tian'anmen Square to watch the extravaganza that is planned. Entry into the entire area around the Square, even now, is restricted and you'll need a special pass to enter/exit at all times during the days around October 1. If I want to see it, I'll have to stay at home and watch it on TV. Too bad. I had such a great time in Beijing during the Olympics, I was hoping to witness this spectacular event as well.

Now I've got to figure out Plan B for the holidays.

I’m sure you know this, but there is more to see in Beijing than Tian’anmen Square. Maybe you could go and relax at the Temple of Heaven, or visit to the Summer Palace; which is listed as one of the world UNESCO World Heritage Sites and ranked as one of the finest classical gardens in the world.
How many times have you been to China?

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the advice. I’ve been to all the places you mention, most of which I also advise readers to visit in my Best of Beijing article. But thanks for the reminder that there’s so much to see in Beijing – truly the cultural mecca of China.

As a matter of fact, I live in Shanghai. I try to get to Beijing at least once a year and was hoping to take part in the festivities – as I mentioned – for the upcoming holidays. I’m still working on that Plan B. Since you work for a tour company, perhaps you can advise us on some places that are not so popular to visit over the holidays but are great locations?

Best,
Sara
