While happy to have the diversion, I wasn’t particularly excited about seeing the show. I’ve seen acrobatics performances before and they’re all pretty similar. Girl who can bend herself into a pretzel? Check. Ladies spinning multiple plates on sticks? Check. Lots of guys tumbling about and making pyramids? Check.
Unbelievably, ERA, blew me away. Advertised with the slogan “miss it and you miss Shanghai”, the show is truly a staggering display of acrobatics and staging. It’s amazing how much audience tension a guy balancing on a stack of boards, balanced on a rolling pipe, trying to flip with one foot four bowls atop his head (that is already balancing six bowls) – can create. And the finale, with 8 motorcyclists whizzing around a giant metal cage, still gives me the shivers when I think about how they practiced.
